Asterolepis ornata
Armoured fish are an entirely extinct class of fish that existed 433 million years ago. Our focus – Asterolepis ornata – is found in the Gauja and Lode formation sediments in Latvia and Estonia, the Šventoji formation in Lithuania, and in the northwestern part of Russia in the Leningrad and Vologda regions. The best fossils – complete skeletons – have been discovered in the clays of the Lode quarry.

During the Devonian period, fish ruled the oceans, seas, and rivers, which is why the Devonian period, which began 419 million years ago, is called the Age of Fish. On 9 August 2014, 10,000 Europeans gathered at the Sigulda Balona meadow to revive the Age of Fish in scientific workstations and a multimedia event.
